Medium-Firm Doesn't Mean the Same Thing for Everyone. Here's Why.

If you have done any research on mattresses, you have almost certainly arrived at "medium-firm." It shows up in every article, every buyer's guide, and most mattress descriptions. It is not wrong advice. It is just incomplete in a way that matters.

Here is what "medium-firm" actually means — and why the same label can feel completely different depending on who is sleeping on it.

Firmness is perceived, not fixed

A mattress rated "medium-firm" does not feel medium-firm to every person who lies on it. It feels medium-firm at a particular body weight pressing against a particular combination of materials. Change the person, and the effective firmness changes.

A 130-pound person and a 220-pound person lying on the same mattress are compressing the comfort layers to very different depths. The lighter person may not engage the support layers much at all, which makes the mattress feel softer and more cushioning. The heavier person pushes through those layers more quickly, which makes the same mattress feel firmer and less contouring. Both are lying on the same mattress. It does not feel the same to either of them.

Sleep position matters as much as weight

Your body weight tells you how much force is going into the mattress. Your sleep position tells you where that force is concentrated.

Side sleepers put the majority of their body weight through the shoulder and hip. Those points need to sink in enough to allow the spine to stay neutral — if the mattress is too firm, the shoulder and hip bridge instead of contouring, which laterally flexes the spine all night. Side sleepers usually need a surface with more give at those pressure points, even if their total body weight might suggest a firmer mattress.

Back sleepers distribute weight more evenly, with the lumbar region needing support to prevent the lower back from sinking and losing its natural curve. Medium to medium-firm tends to work well for back sleepers across a range of body weights.

Stomach sleepers are the most challenging case. Lying face-down puts the lumbar spine into extension, and a mattress that is too soft worsens this significantly. Firmer surfaces reduce the hyperextension. Even with the right mattress, stomach sleeping puts more strain on the spine than side or back sleeping — it is worth knowing that going in.

Why most mattress advice lands on medium-firm

Medium-firm is the starting point for the average adult back sleeper at an average body weight. For that specific person, it is a reasonable answer. The problem is that most mattress buying advice is written for that person — and most people are not exactly that person.

If you are a lighter side sleeper, medium-firm may be too firm. If you are a heavier back sleeper, medium-firm may actually feel too soft. If you and your partner have different sleep positions and different body weights, a shared medium-firm mattress is a compromise that is probably slightly wrong for both of you.

What actually gets you to the right firmness

The Sleep Foundation notes that the best firmness level depends on sleep position, body weight, and personal preference — in that order. No label alone tells you what you need.

The most reliable way to find your actual firmness is to lie on a variety of surfaces in your actual sleep position — not on your back for two minutes in a showroom, but in the position you actually spend most of the night in — and see how your spine feels. Pressure mapping takes this further by showing you exactly where your body is putting load on the surface and whether your spine is staying neutral or being pushed out of alignment.

That is what the Discovery Experience is for. We do not ask you to guess your firmness. We map it.
