Every couple knows this fight. One of you is kicking off the covers at 2 a.m. The other is curled up in a hoodie, stealing the duvet. Somebody gets up to nudge the thermostat, and the whole thing starts again tomorrow night.
Here is the reassuring part: you are not incompatible. You just run at different temperatures — and once you understand why, it is a very fixable problem.
It is not you. It is biology.
People regulate body heat differently. Differences in metabolism, body size, hormones, and circulation mean one partner genuinely sleeps warmer than the other. It is not pickiness, and it is not in your head.
The Sleep Foundation points to a bedroom around 18–20°C (65–68°F) as the sweet spot for sleep — but the two of you will still feel that same room differently. The goal is not to "win" the thermostat. It is to set the room cool and then let each of you fine-tune your own side.
End the cover tug-of-war
One of the simplest fixes is the one most couples have never tried: two separate duvets instead of one shared one. The warm sleeper gets something light, the cold sleeper gets something cozy, and nobody wakes up uncovered at 3 a.m. It looks a little different made up in the morning, and it changes everything at night.
Cool the surface, not just the air
If one of you sleeps hot, the bed itself is often the real problem — an older foam mattress traps heat and holds it against you all night. A few changes help the warm partner without freezing out the cold one:
• Breathable sheets in a natural fibre like bamboo or cotton instead of synthetic
• A cooling mattress protector that pulls heat away from the surface
• For the hot sleeper, a mattress that leans cooler — think coils for airflow and heat-drawing comfort layers rather than dense, heat-trapping foam
There is no single "cooling mattress" that is right for every hot sleeper, but the materials genuinely make a difference in how warm the bed feels.
The real upgrade for couples who sleep differently: a Split King
If temperature is only half the battle — maybe one of you likes it firm and the other soft, or one of you reads and the other is already out — a Split King is the setup worth knowing about.
A Split King is two Twin XL mattresses placed side by side, the width of a King. Because they are two separate beds under one fitted setup, each of you can have:
• A different firmness or feel on your own side
• Your own adjustable base — so one of you can raise the head to read or ease snoring while the other stays flat
• Almost no motion transfer — when one of you turns over or gets up early, the other side barely moves
It is the closest thing to each of you getting your perfect bed, without sleeping in separate rooms.
You should not have to compromise to one feel
So many couples buy one mattress as a compromise — a little too firm for one, a little too warm for the other — and then quietly sleep badly for years. You do not have to. The technology to give each of you your own comfort already exists.
The best way to sort it out is together. Come into any of our 6 Saskatchewan stores as a couple and we will map how each of you actually sleeps — where you put pressure, who runs hot, who needs more support — and show you what dual-comfort options feel like in person. There is no single "couples mattress." The right answer depends on both of you.
