Three things. It’s hand-finished: built in Calgary, then compressed in a tufting press and tufted by hand, with a black velvet border and velvet handles embroidered with a maple leaf. It’s made with natural materials: New Zealand Joma Wool and quilted natural latex over foam-encased zoned pocket coils (1,250 in a Queen). And it’s ours: Lotus is Modern Mattress’s own brand, sold only at our six Saskatchewan stores and at modernmattress.ca.

Joma Wool is a premium natural fibre used in the Artisan cover. It naturally wicks moisture away from your body while regulating temperature, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. Unlike synthetic cooling gels that wear out over time, Joma Wool performs consistently year after year. Tufting is a timeless mattress-making method: cords are drawn right through the mattress and anchored with small tufts on the top and bottom, which helps hold the layers in place so they don’t shift. It goes back to the days before quilting machines, and you’ll still find it in many high-end luxury mattresses. On the Artisan, the mattress is squeezed in a tufting press, then each tuft is set by hand with a long needle. It adds a lot of hand-build time, which is why most mattresses skip it.

Both sit on zoned pocket coils. The Hybrid Luxe uses Arctic Luxe Adaptive Foam for a sink-in, contouring feel. The Artisan uses New Zealand Joma Wool and quilted natural latex for a more buoyant feel, and adds hand tufting, a velvet border and more coils (1,250 vs 1,106 in a Queen). At the top of our range, guests often pair the Lotus Artisan with the Pro Adjustable Base.
