If only one of you sleeps hot — read this first
A lot of the customers who walk in asking about cooling mattresses aren't actually the hot sleeper. They're the partner of the hot sleeper. One of you is throwing the duvet off at 1 a.m. while the other is freezing. One of you is opening the window in March. One of you has been quietly losing sleep over the other's tossing for three summers running.

Cooling-mattress shopping is, more often than not, a couples problem. We'll cover the mattress side of it below — but the real fix often lives on the base (an adjustable base lets one partner elevate slightly so heat moves away from the body, without affecting the other side) or in a split-king system where each side runs independently. If that's where you're really at, book a free Discovery Experience and we'll fit both of you together.
Hot sleeping isn't always about summer
For a lot of customers — especially women in their 40s and 50s — sleeping hot has nothing to do with the calendar. It's about hormones. Perimenopause and menopause cause hot flashes and night sweats year-round, and Saskatchewan winters in a forced-air-heated home can be worse than the summers because there's nowhere for the heat to go. Many women experience these symptoms during the transition, and many report sleep disturbances that last years.
If that's you, or your partner, the construction principles are the same as for any hot sleeper: hybrid coils, latex or wool comfort layers, breathable wicking covers (Tencel, eucalyptus, cotton — never polyester). But two things matter more than they do for someone who's just hot in July:
- Wicking, not "cool to touch." Phase-change covers feel cool the first few minutes, then your body soaks them. What you actually want is a fabric that pulls moisture away. Wool can absorb roughly 30% of its weight in moisture before it feels wet. Tencel and bamboo viscose run close behind.
- A waterproof breathable mattress protector is non-negotiable. Soaking through sheets isn't just a laundry problem — it's a permanent mattress problem if it goes unprotected.
An adjustable base helps more than people expect. A slight head-up angle moves trapped heat away from your body and improves airflow. It also lets you cool down at 3 a.m. without leaving the bed.
The Discovery Experience is built for this. Tell us what's happening at night and we'll tell you what your body needs. No awkwardness — it's just sleep, and we're matter-of-fact about all of it.
Why Saskatchewan summers are different (and brutal on hot sleepers)
If you've spent a July night in a Regina bungalow without central AC, an upstairs bedroom in an old Saskatoon walk-up, a Yorkton farmhouse with a metal roof, or a Moose Jaw second-floor with one rotating fan — you already know.
Prairie summers do something specific to bedrooms: hot days, hot nights, dry air, long daylight (it's still light at 10:30 p.m. in late June). Walls hold heat. Forced-air systems are designed for the 8 months of cold, not the 4 months of heat. Many older Saskatchewan homes don't have central air; many newer condos have AC in the living room and zero airflow in the bedroom.
A cooling mattress doesn't fix the room — but it can be the difference between waking up dripping and getting through the night. Picking the right one is about understanding two things: how mattresses actually heat you up, and what real cooling features look like vs. marketing.
How a mattress makes you hot — the short version
Body heat moves out of you in two ways while you sleep: airflow (convection) and contact transfer (conduction). A mattress can block both:
- Memory foam wraps around you and traps heat against your body. Traditional all-foam mattresses are the worst offenders for hot sleepers.
- Cheap covers don't breathe. A polyester knit fabric, no matter how nicely marketed, doesn't move heat off your skin.
- Solid foam cores have no airflow path. No coils means no chimney for warm air to escape.
A cooling mattress fixes all three.
What actually keeps a mattress cool — what to look for, what to ignore
What works
- Hybrid construction (pocketed coils + foam). The coil unit is a built-in airflow path. Hot air rises through it and out. This is the single most effective cooling feature.
- Latex, especially Talalay latex. Latex has open-cell structure that breathes naturally and doesn't trap heat the way memory foam does.
- Gel-infused or open-cell memory foam comfort layers. These improve memory foam's heat retention without losing its pressure-relieving feel. Not a magic bullet on their own — pair with coils.
- Breathable covers — Tencel, cotton, eucalyptus blends. These wick moisture and feel cool to the touch.
- Phase-change cover materials ("Iced," "ChiliPad-like," "cool-to-touch"). The cool-touch effect fades after the first 30 minutes, but it helps you fall asleep — when your core temperature is dropping anyway.
What to ignore
- "Cooling memory foam" with no coils underneath. Marketing. Memory foam still wraps and traps heat — gel infusion only delays the heat-up.
- Gimmick fabrics with no breathability test. Read the cover content; if it's mostly polyester, it won't breathe.
- Mattresses that say "cooling" in the name with no construction details. Ask what the actual cooling features are. If the answer is vague, the cooling is vague.
Modern Mattress's cooling lineup — what to try in Saskatchewan
We carry two Saskatchewan-designed, Canadian-made private-label lines — Modern Mattress (Saskatchewan-owned since 2014) and LOTUS Sleep Products (Saskatoon-founded, 2018) — at all six Saskatchewan stores. Both lines are designed in Saskatchewan and made in Canada — including the specialty foams, pocket coils, and fabrics. Every mattress we sell is made in Canada — we don't import a single one.

The four cooling-friendly options:
The Signature (from $1,699) — our most-recommended for hot sleepers
A hybrid built around cooling gel, a breathable cover, and a pocketed-coil base with a reinforced lumbar zone. Available in three feels — Firm, Medium, and Soft — so you match firmness to your body without giving up the cooling. This is the bed we most often recommend when "hot sleeping" is the primary problem you're trying to solve, whether that's a Saskatchewan summer in an old bungalow or year-round perimenopause and menopause night sweats. Couples and back sleepers in particular keep coming back to this one when they try a few feels in store.
The Hybrid Luxe (from $2,599) — premium cooling and pressure relief
Our top-tier cooling hybrid. Pocketed coils, gel-infused memory foam comfort layers, a breathable cover. The pick when you want maximum pressure relief alongside cooling — heavier sleepers, side sleepers with shoulder or hip pain, or couples who want a premium feel.

The Natural (from $2,499) — latex, naturally cool
Talalay latex over a pocketed-coil base. Latex breathes naturally and pairs with the coils for excellent airflow. Bouncier and more responsive than memory foam — closer to a "traditional" mattress feel without the heat trap. The right pick for shoppers who want all-natural materials.
The Aria (from $699 Twin) — entry cooling foam
Our value cooling option. All-foam construction with cooling gel for breathability. If you want hybrid cooling without the higher ticket of the Signature or Hybrid Luxe, this is the answer.
Add cooling accessories: Hush Iced sheets and Hush Graphite topper
Even on the right mattress, a polyester sheet set will cook you. Hush Iced sheets and a Hush Graphite cooling topper are the two single biggest comfort upgrades for any cooling mattress. We stock them at every store.
Consider an adjustable base — especially for couples
An adjustable base isn't a luxury for hot sleepers; it's an underrated cooling lever. A slight head elevation moves trapped heat away from your back and improves airflow under the mattress. And in a split-king setup, each partner adjusts their side independently — so the hot sleeper can elevate without disturbing the partner who isn't. Our Essential, Plus, and Pro bases are matched to every mattress in our cooling lineup. If "we want to fix this for both of us, not just for one" is the situation, the base is usually where the real fix happens.

What our customers actually say (about the Signature)
"Connor helped us pick out a king Signature and an adjustable base. The body mapping was really cool and confirmed what he recommended. Delivery was three days later and the guys had it set up in under 10 minutes. Sleeping better already. Thanks Modern Mattress!" — Brent K., Saskatoon

What to do tonight if you can't replace your mattress yet
A few cheap fixes that genuinely work while you save up:
- Pull the duvet off and use a sheet only on hot nights. Most people overdress their bed in summer.
- Switch to Tencel, cotton percale, or bamboo viscose sheets. Polyester sheets are a heat trap.
- Add a breathable cooling topper — Hush Graphite is what we sell, but any 2-inch latex or gel-infused topper helps.
- Drop your bedroom temperature to 17–19°C if you can. Your body wants to be cool to fall asleep.
- Run a fan with the bedroom door open — moving air across your skin is more effective than a still cooler room.
When you're ready to replace the mattress itself, that's when the real fix happens.
Frequently asked questions about cooling mattresses
What's the best cooling mattress for hot sleepers in Saskatchewan?
The most effective cooling construction is a hybrid mattress with pocketed coils, a gel-infused or latex comfort layer, and a breathable wicking cover. Our most-recommended hot-sleeper pick is The Signature — a hybrid with cooling gel, breathable fabric, a reinforced lumbar zone, and three firmness options (Firm, Medium, Soft). The Hybrid Luxe is our premium cooling option for buyers who also need maximum pressure relief; The Natural (latex) is the all-natural alternative. Pair any of them with Hush Iced sheets and a Hush Graphite topper for the biggest temperature improvement.
Is memory foam too hot in a Saskatchewan summer?
Traditional all-foam memory foam mattresses are the worst category for hot sleepers — the foam wraps around you and traps body heat with no airflow path. Gel-infused memory foam in a hybrid (with coils underneath) is dramatically cooler than all-foam. If you're a hot sleeper, choose a hybrid, not an all-foam mattress.
Where can I try a cooling mattress in Regina?
Modern Mattress at 2030 Prince of Wales Drive and 4123 Rochdale Boulevard carries our full cooling lineup. Lie on the Signature (our most-recommended hot-sleeper pick), the Hybrid Luxe, the Natural latex, and the Aria all in one visit.
Where can I find a cooling mattress in Saskatoon?
Modern Mattress at 601 51st Street East and #90-3020 Meadows Parkway has our full cooling lineup. Lie on the Signature (our most-recommended hot-sleeper pick), the Hybrid Luxe, the Natural latex, and the Aria. Online cooling mattresses from Endy, Casper, Douglas, and Polysleep ship to Saskatoon by courier, but you can't try them in person first.
Do cooling mattresses really work, or is it marketing?
A real cooling mattress — hybrid construction with coils and a breathable cover — measurably reduces heat retention compared to an all-foam mattress. The technology is real. What's marketing is a pure-foam mattress with the word "cooling" in the name and no construction differences.
What's the best mattress for menopause night sweats in Saskatchewan?
A hybrid mattress with pocketed coils, a cooling-gel or latex comfort layer, and a wicking cover (Tencel, eucalyptus, or cotton — not polyester). Pair with a waterproof breathable mattress protector and Hush Iced sheets. The Signature is our most-recommended fit for menopause night sweats — a hybrid with cooling gel, breathable fabric, and three feel options so you can match firmness to your body. The Hybrid Luxe and Natural latex are the premium and all-natural alternatives. Available at our Saskatoon, Regina, Yorkton, and Moose Jaw stores. The Discovery Experience walks both partners through the right combination — free, 30 minutes, no pitch.
Why am I sleeping hot in winter in Saskatchewan?
Forced-air heating in a sealed Saskatchewan home keeps the bedroom warm even when you don't need it to be. If you're also experiencing perimenopause or menopause hot flashes, those symptoms continue year-round and often feel worse in winter because there's nowhere for the heat to go. The mattress fix is the same as for summer: a hybrid mattress with breathable construction, a wicking cover, and (often) an adjustable base.
How much does a good cooling mattress cost in Saskatchewan?
Cooling mattresses in our Saskatchewan stores start around $699 for a Twin (Modern Mattress's Aria — all-foam with cooling gel). The Signature — our most-recommended hot-sleeper pick — starts at $1,699. Premium hybrid and latex options run $1,999 to $3,499 (Natural latex and Hybrid Luxe). Mattress-in-a-box cooling hybrids ship to Saskatchewan at roughly the same price points. The math is similar; the difference is whether you can lie on it before you commit.
Will a cooling topper alone fix sleeping hot?
Sometimes. A latex or graphite cooling topper on top of an okay mattress can buy you a few comfortable years. But if your underlying mattress is an old all-foam model that traps heat, a topper is a band-aid — at some point you'll want a hybrid.
What size mattress fits a Saskatchewan condo bedroom?
Most Saskatchewan condo master bedrooms (Regina downtown, Saskatoon Stonebridge, etc.) fit a queen comfortably, with room for nightstands. A king works in larger units. We'll measure with you in store and check delivery clearance — narrow stairs and tight elevators in older buildings can rule out a king or split-king.
