The Honest Answer

Most Mattresses Give Their Best for 8 to 10 Years.

Some last a little less. Some last a little more. Nothing snaps on a set date, which is why it sneaks up on you.

Here’s what actually wears out. The foam packs down, so the top stops cushioning. The coils lose their push, so they stop lifting you back. And the middle of the bed stays high while your side slowly sinks, because nobody sleeps in the middle.

That sinking is the part that hurts. Your hips drop, your spine bends all night, and you wake up stiff. Your bed didn’t fail overnight. It just quit holding you a little more each year.

Two Minutes, Two Household Tools

The Broom Handle Check. Do It Tonight.

You don’t need an expert to see this one. You need a broom and a ruler.

How to Check Your Own Bed

Is it really sagging, or does it just feel that way?

  1. Strip the bed. Sheets, pad, everything off, so you can see the surface.
  2. Lay a broom handle flat across the dip where you sleep, side to side.
  3. Measure the gap underneath at the deepest point with a ruler.
  4. Check the other side too. One side almost always sinks first.

A gap of 1.5 inches or more is real sagging, and on a Modern Mattress that is a valid warranty claim. Warranty coverage runs by collection, up to 10 years, with the Modern 9-inch line at 5 years. One catch worth knowing: sagging caused by broken slats, a tired frame, or no proper support underneath isn’t covered. Start a warranty claim here.

Sound Familiar?

Signs Your Bed Is Done.

Not every worn out mattress looks worn out. Most of the time you feel it long before you see it.

1

You wake up sore, and it eases once you’re up and moving.

2

You sleep hotter than you used to.

3

You feel your partner move more than you ever did.

4

You sleep better in hotels than at home.

5

You can see a dip where you sleep, and the middle sits higher.

6

You roll toward your partner in the night without meaning to.

One of these on its own might be a rough week. Three or more, on a bed that’s eight years or older, and it’s the bed.

A Modern Mattress on an adjustable base instead of an old box spring
The Layer Nobody Checks

Your Box Spring Is Probably the Hidden Saggy Layer.

How long do box springs last? About the same as a mattress, roughly 8 to 10 years, and often less. It’s a wood frame with springs or slats inside. Once the wood loosens or a slat cracks, the middle drops, and your mattress drops with it. The fabric hides all of it, so it looks fine.

Do you need a new box spring with a new mattress? Most of our beds don’t use one at all. They sit on a solid platform, a matching foundation, or an adjustable base. If you still have a box spring, replace it at the same time. Putting a brand new mattress on a tired base is the fastest way to make the new bed sag early.

How often should you replace a box spring? Every time you replace the mattress. Treat them as one bed, not two purchases. If your bed uses slats instead, they need to be no more than 2 inches apart and none of them cracked. Snap a photo of what your bed sits on and bring it in. We’ll tell you straight.

What Guests Tell Us In-Store

Nearly half the guests we fit are sleeping on a mattress over ten years old.

Close to two thirds are on a bed eight years or older. So if you’re reading this thinking yours is ancient, you’re in very good company.

Guests we fit at the Discovery Stage tell us how old their current mattress is. Ten years or more is the single most common answer we hear. Nobody replaces a bed on schedule. Most people replace it when it finally starts to hurt, and there’s no shame in that.

What to Do About It. Three Steps.

No guessing, no lifting, no pressure.

1

Come In for the Discovery Experience

It’s free and takes about 30 minutes. We ask how you sleep and what hurts, then body mapping shows where you carry your weight. Not what fit you ten years ago. What your body needs now. You leave with a printout, whether you buy or not.

2

We Deliver and Take the Old One Away

Front-door delivery is free within city limits of any of our stores. Add $59 for in-home setup. Or choose $99 VIP and we bring it to the room, set it up, and haul your old mattress away. Nothing for you to lift, and nothing left in the garage.

3

Take 100 Nights to Be Sure

A new bed can feel strange for the first week, because your body is used to the dip. Give it about 30 nights. The 100 Night Sleep Guarantee gives you one in-store comfort exchange within 100 nights for a $99 exchange fee, so you have time. Financing is available at 0% for 12 months with a $90 admin fee.

What Goes Back In Its Place

A Bed That Holds You Where the Old One Dropped You.

Three things do the work. We fit all three to your body in one visit.

Support That Stops the Sink

Coils or a firm core that push back under your hips instead of letting them drop. This is the layer your old bed lost first, and the one you feel every morning.

A Comfort Layer Matched to You

Plush, medium, or firm isn’t a taste test. It’s a fit. Body mapping shows which one keeps your spine straight, so you stop guessing in a showroom.

A Base That Won’t Quit Early

A solid platform, a matching foundation, or an adjustable base. Anything that keeps the new mattress flat and supported, instead of the old box spring pulling it down again.

Questions We Hear Every Week

Quick Answers.

Straight answers about mattress age, box springs, and breaking in a new bed.

How long does a mattress last?

Most mattresses give their best years for about 8 to 10. Some last a little less, some a little more. Nothing breaks on a set date. The foam packs down, the coils lose their push, and the middle stays high while your side slowly sinks. The real test is not the calendar. It is how you feel when you wake up.

How long do box springs last?

About the same as a mattress, roughly 8 to 10 years, and often less. A box spring is a wood frame with springs or slats inside. Once the wood loosens or a slat cracks, the middle drops and the mattress on top drops with it. You usually cannot see it, because the fabric hides the damage.

Do you need to replace your box spring when you replace your mattress?

Most of our beds do not use a box spring at all. They sit on a solid platform, a matching foundation, or an adjustable base. If you do still have a box spring, replace it with the mattress. An old one is often the hidden saggy layer, and putting a new mattress on it makes the new bed sag early. Broken slats, a sagging frame, or no proper support underneath can cause premature sagging, and that is not covered by warranty.

How often should you replace your box spring?

Every time you replace the mattress. Think of the two as one bed, not two purchases. If your support is slats instead, they must be no more than 2 inches apart, and none of them cracked. Bring a photo of what your bed sits on and we will tell you straight whether it still does its job.

How long does it take to break in a new mattress?

Give it about 30 nights. A new bed holds you up where the old one let you drop, so the first week can feel strange even when the fit is right. Your body is used to the dip. That is why every Modern Mattress comes with the 100 Night Sleep Guarantee, which is one in-store comfort exchange within 100 nights for a $99 exchange fee, so you have time to be sure.

How do you check your mattress for sagging?

Strip the bed, grab a broom handle and a ruler. Lay the broom handle flat across the dip where you sleep, then measure the gap underneath at the deepest point. A gap of 1.5 inches or more is real sagging, and on a Modern Mattress that is a valid warranty claim. Check both sides. One side often sinks well before the other.

What if the new mattress does not feel right at home?

Every Modern Mattress comes with the 100 Night Sleep Guarantee: one in-store comfort exchange within 100 nights for a $99 exchange fee, so your consultant swaps you to a better fit. It is an exchange, not a refund. Warranty coverage runs by collection, up to 10 years, with the Modern 9-inch line at 5 years.
