The Early 2000s: When Sleep Was Still Simple

At the turn of the century, “sleep hygiene” mostly meant not eating Doritos in bed and turning off the TV before midnight. Life was simpler. Phones had cords (or flip screens at best), and no one was tracking their REM cycles.

Then came the smartphone era — and suddenly, bedtime had company. Notifications, social media, and glowing screens became the new nightlights. Our beds stopped being a place for rest and started doubling as scroll stations.


The 2010s: When Sleep Became a Competition

By the 2010s, sleep wasn’t just something you did — it was something you optimized. Wearables, apps, and even smart mattresses claimed to unlock “perfect sleep.”

REM cycles, heart rate variability, and pillow loft became everyday conversation starters. And let’s be honest — your alarm clock probably judged you more than your boss did.

Sleep had turned into a performance metric, and many of us still woke up tired.


The 2020s: The Age of Streaming and Sleepless Scrolls

Fast-forward to the 2020s — where we can binge an entire season, doomscroll into oblivion, and check the weather at 3 a.m. (even though we’re indoors).

Naps are now socially acceptable — as long as they’re Instagram-worthy.
Mattresses can adjust their firmness mid-night, tracking every toss and turn like a sleep-obsessed personal trainer.

And yet, despite all the tech, one truth remains: we’re all still chasing eight good hours.


Some Things Never Change

Sleep is still essential. Still mysterious. Still mocked by our own devices.
Technology may have evolved, but our relationship with rest hasn’t changed much — we still crave it, fight it, and overthink it.
